SMAU was the annual meeting point for the entire Italian technology sector: software, hardware, networks, services. Every autumn, in the Fieramilano pavilions, companies of every size gathered, from major international vendors to small regional software houses.
At the 1999 edition, Simple appeared for the first time with a dedicated stand. The product was already live at several companies, but SMAU represented something different: the opportunity to present it to a national audience, to gauge interest in person, and to observe the reactions of those seeing it for the first time.
The name was a promise. The software was the proof.
When exhibitors become spectators
From the second edition onward, it happened with a certain regularity: staff from neighboring stands would get up and come to watch the live Simple demonstrations. They did so because the stand was very busy while theirs struggled to fill, and they wanted to understand why.
The reason lay not only in the product and the type of users it attracted. It was in the ability to run concrete demos with recognizable use cases and no abstraction. Visitors found answers before they even asked questions.
The trips to Milan departed from Puglia aboard a fitted minivan. The road became part of the work: materials to prepare, ideas to sketch, brainstorming that arose from conversation during the journey. The SMAU experience did not begin at the pavilion entrance.
